The Woman's Club of Downey was established in 1898 by a group of local woman who called themselves "The Friday Afternoon Club". Seven charter members met in homes every Friday. The motive set forth in the by-laws was to "promote the social, moral, and intellectual interest of the community and to establish a public library."
And our founders did exactly that, they started the first public library right out of a members home. And the rest is history......the history of Downey and those very club woman with a passion to impact their community for the greater good.
Today the Woman's Club of Downey is a thriving, energetic club that continues to promote the interests of the community. Our members and Board of Directors are dedicated members of the community. Many of our members serve on multiple boards, that's how we stay connected.
